Housed within the walls of San Francisco's landmark Palace of Fine Arts, the Exploratorium is a collage of hundreds of interactive exhibits in the areas of science, art, and human perception.
The Exploratorium stands in the vanguard of the movement of the "museum as educational center." It provides access to, and information about, science, nature, art, and technology.
For the kids it feels like a discovery or children's museum on steroids. There are revolving exhibits and the musuem has a staff of tinkering scientists who are always working on the next great exhibit to play with. In fact, you can see their efforts unfolding as the facility provides an amazing view into the staff's work areas.
The musuem is great for kids of all ages starting at about 3 but there are several exhibits that can keep a two year old mesmerized as well. The best thing about the museum is probably how well it keeps kids of the 30something variety engaged as well. You'll learn something new every time you visit this place.
This unique museum was founded in 1969 by noted physicist and educator Dr. Frank Oppenheimer, who devoted his efforts to it—and was its director—until his death in 1985.
