MISSION STATEMENT
Inspiring children to cultivate creativity through the theatrical arts.
The Children's Theatre is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit theatre and has operated in Utah since 1985 in various locations in downtown Salt Lake City.
Children's Theatre & School of the Arts currently operates in it's 99 seat black box theatre.
We have 3 programs:
Mainstage
Where theatre begins.
The Mainstage = public performances and is in the current location of 237 South State Street. The facility consists of a studio, where rehearsals are held and a 99 seat black box theatre with a thrust stage. While the venue is smaller, it allows for young audience members to sit close to the stage. Six production will be offered to the public this year on selected Friday evenings and two matinees on Saturdays. For many children it will be the first time they will sit as an audience member during a live play. The plays are geared towards younger audiences with stories based on classical, modern and original plays. Although it is for children, the plays do not alienate an adult.
School Performances
Buses, buses and more buses.
Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (Some Monday and Friday too) mornings during the school year, school buses and/or parents vehicles pull up to the Children’s Theatre to see a performance and to participate in live theatre. For many of the students who come, it is the very first time seeing a live play at a theatre. In our 99 seat theatre we can host 8,500+ school children per year. We hope in the future we will have a facility with a larger seating capacity to bring more students around the State to experience live theatre. Schools purchase tickets for students and chaperones for $5 per seat compared to the $12 ticket price for the Mainstage. Students who are unable to attend receive a free ticket to come to one of our public performances so the student does not miss the opportunity to experience a live production at our theatre. This year we are offering two titles to excite and surprise our young student audiences, Puss In Boots and The Journey of Johnny Appleseed. We are always delighted with the opportunity we have to provide an experience for the schools to share in live theatre.
Theatre School
Great things come in small packages.
We have three divisions within our school. Generally children ages 6-16 participate in our theatre school classes. First our school year classes teach children the elements of working on the stage and teamwork. About 25 students per month (approximately 200 per year) take classes from September through May. Each session results in a short performance recital on our stage. Second, we hold several Summer Theatre Camps and two Partner Camps with Utah Museum of Natural History and Red Butte Gardens during June, July and August. Approximately 120+ students participate in our Summer Camps. Lastly, we introduced Youth Stage in the fall of 2006. Youth Stage is a performance based class in which students work with our Mainstage directors and designers to produce a play in the world of “real” theatre. Their work culminates into 6 - 10 performances for the public. Approximately 100 students are involved with Youth Stage throughout the year. The students are responsible for each other and their performance. The students who perform in this program have literally brought smiles, laughter and tears to those who sit in the audience.
