Youth Theatre at the U uses creative drama and process drama work as the foundation for its curriculum. Through our diverse programming, we strive to teach students valuable life-skills and give them a human experience through theatre. Our primary goal is not to create or train professional young actors. Rather, our primary goal is to develop the whole child using theatre as the medium to help them access emotions and explore complex issues.

Youth Theatre has a unique relationship with the University of Utah. As an entity of the Department of Theatre, the organization's staff is comprised of University faculty, staff, and students, complimented by a mix of professional guest artists from the Salt Lake community and the national young people's theatre community.

Youth Theatre at the U's productions are a product of work done in the classroom. They grow from an environment of learning and enrichment for the whole child. Young people are often involved in the entire creative process and development of productions.

Tips

Youth Theatre at the U (YTU) teaches young people to communicate, collaborate, create and celebrate by experiencing, hands on, the theatre arts. In the classroom and in rehearsal, students learn valuable principles, techniques, and skills that help them grow—as people, and as artists. Through discipline-based dramatic discovery, students learn to express their ideas, emotions, opinions, fears, needs and desires, both on and off the stage. YTU is also dedicated to the development and performance of new works that explore the complexities of contemporary issues and social tensions facing young people today. We believe that young people are integral to the creation of this work as writers, actors, dramaturgs, directors, designers, and audience members. Through theatre, our students have the opportunity to celebrate not only the joy and magic of live performance, but life itself. Theatre changes lives!
